If you have not watched anything in a whole year, Netflix will ask if you want to keep your subscription. The company will ask you again after two years on inactivity. And if you don’t confirm that you want to stay subscribed by then, the service will then help you kill your subscription. If you’ve cancelled you’ll still be able to get your profile back if you rejoin within 10 months. This includes your favourites, viewing preferences, account details, and everything else that comes with it.

Netflix admits such inactive accounts come up to less than 0.5% of its subscriber base. It’s also unlikely that anyone not yet allowed to go back to work will be subscribed, but not watch anything for a whole year. And even then, a whole year’s worth of subscription money can build up to be quite the considerable amount. Especially if you’ve forgotten about it, which is likely with any other subscription service. At any rate, Netflix says you’ll start getting emails or in app notifications telling you this within the week. It’s hard to argue that it’s a nice gesture, even if the conditions for it make it easy to invoke cynicism. (Source: Netflix)
