But it looks like we don’t have to be thinking about those rumours anymore because the franchise is not going to be rebooted — we’re actually getting a sequel. Oh boy, this is going to split the internet in half, isn’t it? According to Variety, Lana Wachowski (formerly Laurence Wachowski) is set to write and direct a fourth film set in the world of The Matrix. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are set to reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity. Immediately, a lot of questions pop into mind. For starters, why isn’t Lily Wachowski (formerly Andrew Paul Wachowski) working on the film too? From The Matrix to Sense8, The Wachowskis have always worked as a team, so it’s weird that they’re not collaborating on this one. Could it be that after a string of poorly received films, the duo has finally decided to part ways as far as filmmaking is concerned? Of course, this is just me speculating.
It’s also reported that Lana Wachowski will be working on the script together with Aleksander Hemon and David Mitchel. Note that the first three Matrix films were all penned by the Wachowski siblings only. But this could be a good thing. The Wachowskis hasn’t made anything truly masterful since The Matrix. A lot of the times, their great ideas are ruined by convoluted and perhaps even self-indulgent screenplays. So, collaborating with other writers could be exactly what Lana Wachowski needs to finally make another great film. I’m also curious how they plan on bringing Neo and Trinity back into the fold considering the pair died in The Matrix Revolutions. Trinity got impaled when their ship crashed in Machine City and Neo died after defeating Agent Smith inside the Matrix. The Matrix is perhaps one of the most important films to hit the big screen since 90s. A lot of ideas and concept presented in the film are relevant now more than they’ve ever been.
